9 April, 1865: The American Civil War effectively came to an end as Robert E. Lee surrendered the Confederate Army to Ulysses S. Grant.

9 April, 1881: After two days of testimony, Henry McCarty (Billy the Kid) was found guilty of the murder of Sheriff Brady, the only conviction ever secured against any of the combatants in the Lincoln County Cattle War.

9 April, 1992: Former Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega was found guilty of drug and racketeering charges.
